Umang joined the India Ventures team in 2018, he supports existing portfolio companies and carries out investment sourcing and due diligence on their behalf.

What is the job you do at Eight Roads? Can you briefly describe a day in your life at work? e.g. what sort of projects are you working on?

I work with the team to evaluate consumer, financial services and enterprise tech sectors in India. My day to day work entails identifying emerging macro trends and building theses to identify  opportunities, meeting energetic entrepreneurs and supporting our portfolio companies. A typical day would cover a couple of entrepreneur meetings, diligence calls and strategic discussions with a portfolio company.

Looking back, what’s been the steepest learning curve on your career journey so far?

My steepest learning curve has been the experience to build a family nutrition brand from scratch at Healthkart. For someone who had never taken a single course in marketing at business school, deep diving into consumer behaviour and translating those insights into product, marketing and strategy had been a revelation. During that brand building journey, I internalized the meaning of “product-market fit” and that has been my steepest learning curve.

If you could give one piece of advice to your 20-year-old self what would it be?

Risk appetite is inversely proportional to one’s opportunity cost and hence the best time to experiment beyond the norms is  when you are 20! If you really want to try something different do it while you are still young. Fail fast, Learn fast! The more you delay the decision, higher is the cost of trying something different.

How do you directly support our entrepreneurs/portfolio companies? Can you give an example?

Having been involved in the P&L and Operations for a large business like Healthkart, I like to bring an outside-in perspective to our portfolio companies. I support the portfolio companies on customer acquisition models, talent identification and help in building capabilities as these businesses scale.
