Alston Zecha
Partner
Alston focuses on FinTech, assessing early-stage investment opportunities for Eight Roads. He also supports the boards and management teams of Eight Roads’ portfolio companies on strategic, financial and operational issues.

What do you like about your job?

The variety of skills required in my role, getting involved at the cutting edge of FinTech and financial services, helping to develop a new firm – Eight Roads – and belonging to the larger family of Fidelity.

What’s been the steepest learning curve of your career so far?

You can’t talk about FinTech these days without mentioning it, so I suppose this is as good a place as any: my steepest learning curve recently has been working to understand the ins and outs of Blockchain Technology.

Which sector or sub-sector do you feel particularly enthused about right now and why?

The FinTech sector. We have barely scratched the surface of technology’s potential to transform financial services, but there is now a growing consciousness that we can make things easier, simpler, faster and cheaper for everyone. The themes and opportunities are universal, albeit with tremendously nuanced local details. The problems are extremely large and complex, but if we solve them, the rewards could be massive; financial inclusion, improved social mobility and increased global economic potential.

How would you describe the culture and team at Eight Roads?

The Eight Roads team is thoughtful, collegial, respectful and focused on the long term. In line with our Fidelity heritage, mutual trust and respect is at the core of everything we do.

If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self what would it be?

Life is short, so focus on doing what you love, don’t waste time on people with bad values, trust your instincts and don’t take yourself (or others) too seriously. Try to leave the world a more interesting place for others than when you found it.
