What is your role at Eight Roads?
The world of a risk manager is hugely varied, which makes it really interesting. I can be supporting one of the principal investment companies undertaking a risk assessment or dealing with an incident one day, working with the venture teams on a deal the next and then arranging insurance for our real estate portfolio the following week. During the last 12 months I have been managing the Eight Roads GDPR programme which has been a different and challenging experience, new to everyone involved, but a good example of the sort of curved balls one gets to deal with.
Looking back, what’s been the steepest learning curve on your career journey so far?
Every new role brings a fresh set of learnings - I have been lucky enough to have worked in a number of different industry sectors including banking, telecommunications, engineering and fine art before joining Eight Roads. You always have to get under the skin of a new company, its people and its culture, plus learn about the industry too.
If you could give one piece of advice to your 20-year-old self what would it be?
Always horizon-scan - constantly looking for the next challenge keeps the job interesting and ensures you as an individual are always learning and growing in experience and expertise.
How do you work with our entrepreneurs?
We work particularly closely with the principal investments providing advice on risk issues, helping run their risk assessment programmes and workshops and providing support when an incident or risk event occurs. We provide guidance notes for the Ventures team to share with their portfolio companies on a wide range of topics e.g. following a risk event where sharing some of the lessons learned with others can be hugely helpful.
