What motivates you?

Curiosity about the world and people’s continuous search for innovation.

What’s been the steepest learning curve of your career so far?

Making the change from a generalist focusing on late-stage deals to a healthcare specialist sourcing venture investment opportunities. I had to learn about new technologies and business models, assess them, and network with entrepreneurs.

What current technology trend do you get most excited about and why?

Gene therapy. In the future, doctors may be able to treat diseases by inserting a gene into a patient’s cells, instead of using medication or surgery. This has the potential to change our lives as much as the Internet did.

How do you think the investment landscape is changing in China – and what does that mean for entrepreneurs?

I think as the capital market cools down, start-up companies will no longer get funded just because they are in the right sector. They will need to have a good team, advanced technology, and a solid sales record or profit model to get funding – and even then they will only be financed at a reasonable level.

If you could only give one piece of advice to an up and coming entrepreneur what would it be?

Work out how you are going to survive and succeed without investors’ money, and then go and ask for the money.
