Laura is responsible for identifying and developing a pipeline of next generation investment talent across the Eight Roads network of captive and associated funds. She also works closely with the Eight Roads portfolio of companies to help leadership teams find the best talent to scale their businesses.

What is the job you do at Eight Roads? Can you briefly describe a day in your life at work? What sort of projects are you working on?

My day often starts with a team update to discuss current hiring initiatives and our pipeline. I typically have four or five meetings a day with potential candidates as well as a range of inspiring entrepreneurs, investors and functional executives with the aim of exchanging ideas and continually enhancing the global Eight Roads ecosystem. I also spend time tracking the next generation and convening high potential talent to share industry insights.

My projects range from hiring rising stars into our investment teams to finding world class executives to help take our portfolio companies to the next level. I also work on longer-term, strategic talent initiatives to further develop our expertise in new sectors and geographies. 

Looking back, what’s been the steepest learning curve on your career journey so far?

What I love about my role is that every day is a learning curve. Working with management teams and helping them to solve people challenges in their businesses throws up so many interesting and varied situations that the learning never ends! 

One particularly memorable occasion was flying to New York to present the findings of a 12 month global assignment to an Executive Committee and having to go solo when my colleagues’ wife went into labour.

If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self what would it be?

To have the patience and resilience to rise above day to day frustrations and set-backs: A career is a marathon not a sprint. Don’t be afraid to reinvent yourself in order to achieve longer-term satisfaction.
